Ignorance and inaccessibility led to loss of lives innumerable loss of lives, leaving a large community in miserable health conditions.
Preventive measures with stress on health education/awareness is the basis of health sector intervention. Every year more than 400 such sessions are organized. Samhathi has the biggest project in Kerala State in palliative care, with more than 2200 terminally sick under care. A massive network of 430 health volunteers, 210 social work volunteers, eight doctors and 17 nurses work in this project. The Children’ Mobile Clinic under support from Samhathi-Austria takes care children’s health in the target villages. Every year 20 to 30 Medical Camps are held for general population and the number will go higher in case of spread or outbreak of epidemics. Since waterborne diseases are common in the area and 92% of the population use contaminated water for drinking purposes, Samhathi also promotes rain water harvesting in the area by providing rain water harvesting systems and trainings which are now also made part of the Local Government projects in the area after the success of Samhathi’s intervention.
