One of the major reasons for the under developed state of the traditional fisherfolk community has been the lack of skill and necessary skill trainings in and around the community. It is not enough to make financial resources available as the absence of skill could ultimately same the attempts made by such endeavours. More than 95% of the women of the community do not possess any skill and therefore it was important to impart necessary skill trainings to them before they were offered the opportunity to take up income generating projects. Samhathi is an authorized training centre by the Coir Board of Government of India to provide various trainings in coir sector. The coir yarn spinning training that lasts about a month is a basic training that would make a woman capable of producing quality coir yarn and earn 50 – 70 rupees a day. Such an income has a vital role to play in the overall development of the family. Women are also offered skill trainings in other coir related production units like making of door mats, geo textiles and a number of bye products. Another area of skill trainings to the girls and women is imparting training in garment making. Samhathi also provides opportunity to young people to undergo training free of cost at Cochin, the nearby city in job oriented courses like basic computer operation, accountancy, catering, office management etc. Samhathi also has a Carpentry Training Centre with the support of Neufarn Town Council of Germany. The carpentry training centre offers one year training in carpentry and production of acrylic products. On an average of young people are trained in carpentry while another 40 – 60 persons are trained in acrylic product making. Samhathi is also planning to organize training programmes in basic computer operation, office management, accountancy and communicative English as this have very high job potential at the movement. In short imparting appropriate skills to the community is very important for the future of this community as the over dependence on fishing alone has been one of the major reasons for its presence status of sheer poverty.
